Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35)

— Surah Al-Ahzab, Ayah 35

English Translation

"...and the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so — for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward."

Explanation & Connection to Overcoming Harmful Habits

This verse lists the qualities of people whom Allah has prepared forgiveness and great reward for. Among those qualities: guarding chastity and frequent remembrance of Allah. These two are linked — the more you remember Allah, the easier it becomes to guard your chastity. The verse also emphasizes that this applies to both men and women, reinforcing that this is a universal human struggle with a universal divine solution. The reward is described as 'great' (adheem) — the same word used to describe Allah's Throne. The magnitude of the reward reflects the magnitude of the struggle. What you are fighting against is hard, and Allah recognizes that with a reward that matches the difficulty.
