Surah Aal-Imran (3:135)

— Surah Aal-Imran, Ayah 135

English Translation

"And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins — and who can forgive sins except Allah? — and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know."

Explanation & Connection to Overcoming Harmful Habits

This verse describes the believers' response to sin in three steps: (1) they remember Allah, (2) they seek forgiveness, and (3) they do not persist knowingly. Notice that the verse does not say 'those who never sin' — it describes those who sin and then respond correctly. The critical phrase is 'do not persist in what they have done while they know.' Using an app like Urge, setting up accountability, and actively working to break the habit — these are all ways of not persisting. As long as you are fighting, you have not persisted. Persistence in sin means giving up the fight entirely, and the fact that you are here means you have not done that.
