Surah Ash-Shams (91:8)

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا ○ قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا ○ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا

— Surah Ash-Shams, Ayah 8

English Translation

"And He inspired it [the soul] with discernment of its wickedness and its righteousness. He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who instills it [with corruption]."

Explanation & Connection to Overcoming Harmful Habits

Allah swears by multiple mighty creations before delivering this message — one of only a few places in the Quran where Allah takes so many oaths in succession. The message: your success or failure in this life comes down to what you do with your soul. 'Zakkaha' (purifies it) versus 'dassaha' (corrupts/buries it). Every harmful video watched buries the soul a little deeper; every time you resist, you purify it. This is the ultimate stakes of your struggle — it is not just about a habit, it is about the trajectory of your soul. And the beautiful thing is that Allah has already inspired in your soul the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. That discomfort you feel after sinning? That is Allah's programming — your fitrah calling you back.
