Surah Yusuf (12:53)

— Surah Yusuf, Ayah 53

English Translation

"And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

Explanation & Connection to Overcoming Harmful Habits

This verse gives us the concept of 'an-nafs al-ammarah bis-su' — the soul that persistently commands evil. Understanding this is liberating, not discouraging. When you feel an overwhelming urge, it is not the 'real you' — it is your nafs doing what it does by nature. The verse ends with two crucial words: Ghafoor (Forgiving) and Raheem (Merciful). Your nafs will push you toward evil, but Allah's mercy is greater than your nafs. The battle is real, the nafs is relentless, but the outcome depends on Allah's mercy — and He is telling you right here that His mercy is abundant.
