Surah Ta-Ha (20:124)

وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا

— Surah Ta-Ha, Ayah 124

English Translation

"And whoever turns away from My remembrance — indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., constricted] life."

Explanation & Connection to Overcoming Harmful Habits

This verse explains the emptiness and anxiety that accompanies a life disconnected from Allah's remembrance. The word 'dank' means constricted, narrow, suffocating — a perfect description of what addiction feels like. The temporary pleasure gives way to guilt, shame, isolation, and a shrinking world where the addiction becomes the center of everything. This is the 'constricted life' Allah describes. The inverse is also true: returning to Allah's remembrance expands your life, brings genuine peace, and replaces the suffocating cycle with spiritual freedom. Breaking free from harmful habits is not just about avoiding sin — it is about reclaiming the spacious, peaceful life Allah intended for you.
